02/11/09: U15's KDSA/Northern Tigers UK/Holland Tour

Below is an excerpt of the U15's KDSA/Northern Tigers UK/Holland Tour 'blog'
- you can read more at: » Facebook

Saturday 10th we went to Liverpool Football Youth Club to watch the U18 Bolton v Liverpool match. While there we noticed one time Man United football great Denis Irwin, so we asked him if he would be in a photo. He said yes, see pics. From there we went to Bolton Wanderers for training. This was the best training session so far, and really gave the kids an idea what the big clubs are looking for.

Monday 12th went to train with Everton in the morning. Then off to Anfield, the home of Liverpool FC for a stadium tour. Outside the stadium there is a memorial to the 96 people who lost their lives in the crush of the Hillsborough tragedy. From there we went to see Tranmere play against Stockport, with Tranmere going down 1-0 due to a penalty by their goalkeeper who was also sent off.

Northern Tigers Kdsa Tour Sunday 11th went to Old Trafford Stadium, home of Man Utd. As most of us don't support Man Utd we just drove past and didn't go in. Only joking... We did a stadium tour, lots of history here including the Munich Games incident, which resulted in 8 team members of Man Utd losing their lives. Then we went to Trafford Centre for shopping. This centre prob 4 to 5 times bigger than Parramatta etc.

Tuesday 13th first training session at Liverpool FC Academy, indoor at their new facilities, on astro-turf. After that we had some downtime, then a match against AFC Liverpool, who we beat 3-2. The linesman was Phil Neal, much decorated Liverpool player, his son referreeing, and his grandson in the AFC team. Then a long trip to Pizza Hut which kept running away from us...

Today (10th) we go to train with Bolton, and watch a special match between the Bolton U18s and the Liverpool U18s. Then back to the hotel for more R&R as it has been very full-on up till now. Quite cold here, around 13 degress Celsius in the middle of the day, but then its been cloudy and raining so it was expected. Hoping for a clearer (and slightly warmer) day today.

Northern Tigers Kdsa Tour The 9th October Photo Album shows the "away" team area surrounded by razor topped bulletproof glass fences. They even have their own train station to get them in and out of the stadium without confronting the home team or fans.

Northern Tigers Kdsa Tour Today (9th) we went to Ajax Stadium in Amsterdam. Our bus was delayed by an accident on the freeway so we went there on the metro. Completed a 2 hour tour of the stadium, by which time our bus had turned up to take us to Schipol Airport. We then flew to Liverpool, and checked into a very nice hotel at Knowsley called "Suites". We will be staying there for the rest of the tour.

Northern Tigers Kdsa Tour Went to Germany today and trained with MonchenGladbach football club. Checked out their Stadium, then played a game against a German football clubs U15's - they thrashed us 9-2 but we had their measure in the second half. Today was probably the heaviest of the tour. The kids are tired, and TV injured his foot - it's getting better already. Tomorrow back to Liverpool.

Northern Tigers Kdsa Tour Landed in Holland (Amsterdam) then bussed it out to Rotterdam to train with Feyenoord Football Club, then back to Amsterdam to train with AZ FC. Sightseeing in Amsterdam and checking out the nightlife, and then dinner. Back to hotel by tram. All tired, but biggest day to come tomorrow when we bus it to Germany for one training session and a game with the U15 German team

Northern Tigers Kdsa Tour Sightseeing thru London, not much covered as it was raining, kids went to Lillywhites, then we went for training with Fullham Football Club

Below are some photos taken during the tour, our thanks to Simon Morrison...

29/10/09: U14 & U16 Women win State Championship

U16 Women win State Championship

U16 GIRLS:
METRO FAR NORTH
A group of talented young women selected to compete for the Metro Far North area have just returned from Dubbo NSW after competing and winning the Football NSW Women's State Titles, held from Monday 11th October to Friday 16th October 2009.

The Metro Far North team consists of eight girls from the Ku-ring-Gai District and eight girls from the Central Coast District, who competed in the Under 16 division.

After a grueling but enjoyable week of playing 8 full games of football, 2 per day, this team of astounding young women came away with the title of STATE CHAMPIONS.

They were up against eight teams from metropolitan and country areas across the state, including Metro Western, Metro East, Metro South, Metro Far South and Metro North and Country Southern, Country Western and Country Riverina.

The Team had one draw, one loss and 6 straight wins in the tournament which saw some extraordinary football throughout the week from strong and determined competition. The winner is determined on a points system with 3 points for a win 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. The number of goals scored and conceded also comes into the equation when determining the STATE CHAMPIONS.

The two districts had not played together before so it is a fantastic effort from the girls who pulled together as a team from their own determined efforts and camaraderie and fantastic and encouraging coaching from John Lozano, together with the terrific mentoring and managing skills of the much loved Lynda Meek.

The final game on Friday 16th was a cracker with Far North scoring 3 goals early in the game. Riverina came back in the second half with 2 great goals making it a real nail biter for the Far North parents and supporters. Far North had to win this game to receive the medals as we were one point ahead on the table going into this final game of the tournament. Stepping up to the task of holding onto their lead was no easy task but the girls pulled everything together and on the final whistle came away with the gold medals in this yearly event.

15/09/09: Under 14's walk tall after narrow defeat

TIGERS UNDER 14's BOYS WALK TALL
AFTER NARROW DEFEAT IN GRAND FINAL

Undefeated this season, The Northern Tigers under 14's Super Youth League Boys side faced off against Dulwich Hill last Saturday in the Grand Final at Melita Stadium.

The NTFC 2009 Under 14's were a predominantly unseen outfit when the KDSA representative side and 'vintage crop' was finally selected at Mills Park with nine new signings this season.

Coach Steve Finch said "coaching staff were extremely pleased with the quality of players that turned up for trialling and were very confident with the players selected. The weight of expectation was upon us as a team already before the season began".

In what was hoped to be an omen last Saturday, after the Team opened their account in round one against this week's Final opponent Tigers, where on that occasion walked away victors outplaying Dulwich Hill 3-2.

But that wasn't to be the case last Saturday, with one goal proving the difference this time favouring the Dulwich Hill side. The Dully boys commenced strongly scoring ten minutes into the match.

Finch praised the boys for an outstanding season saying "The team went through the comp undefeated becoming minor premiers.

It was a major feat, being the only boy's youth team in the whole of the FNSW Youth Leagues to achieve this. Well done to the boys for their discipline and commitment."

The Team rose to the occasion week in week out and with their entertaining brand of Football.

15/09/09: Under 12's Metro Champions

It was only fitting that two teams of the highest quality, each having won their own Conferences and finishing first and second in the overall competition, should play in the Metro League Grand Final, and that they do so at a wonderful venue like CUA Stadium.

Sutherland went into the match as hot favourites, having won the previous two encounters between the teams, including an emphatic 4 - 0 win in the major semi, however as they say in boxing, what's important is not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up, and the Tigers certainly did that.

It is also often said that you have to lose a Grand Final to earn the right to win one, and the experience the Tigers had in being beaten in last year's Grand Final was a powerful motivator for them in the lead up this match. They arrived at the ground in the team bus after a perfectly planned preparation, with a look of steely resolve and calm determination - and it was obvious then that it was going to be very very hard to beat them.

The start of the match was in stark contrast to the semi final. The Tigers rather than passing back as they had done in the semi went onto the attack at the kick-off, sending a long ball to Aiden on the left which put Sutherland under immediate pressure and showed that the Tigers were not going to be intimidated by the occasion. Shortly afterwards, Aiden who had a huge game for the Tigers, got away a good low shot which was well saved by the big Sutherland keeper.

Sutherland then had two very good opportunities, the first when a header from a corner went narrowly over the crossbar, and a second where the Sutherland striker just missed to the right. If one of those shots had gone in, the game would have been very different, particularly when the Tigers were awarded a corner shortly afterwards and Zac curled a superb ball to the back post over the keeper to an unmarked George who somehow managed to get the chest high ball over the line. 1-0 Tigers and the supporters were in full voice. It was a just reward for George who was playing his third year in the Metro League, having played his first season as a youngster in the u/11's in 2007.

It was then the turn of Fergie and Chopper, and boys at the back, to do their bit. Fergie played the game of his life and showed again that he is the best keeper in the competition. One save where he dived full length to his left and saved a certain goal was a cracker, and you could see that it lifted the whole Tigers team. He was calm and assured in everything he did, just what was needed in a big match like this.

Chopper was also at his unflappable best, with Seb and Buddle muscling up in the middle, intercepting passes and putting a ton of pressure on the Sutherland attackers. Ryan also had an outstanding match, showcasing his pace and skills but more importantly showing great patience and discipline in keeping the dangerous Sutherland winger wide and under constant pressure.

Still Sutherland were coming though, and the Tigers supporters hearts were in their mouths as a superb corner came in from the right which looked to be going straight in, before Aiden headed it off the line saving a certain goal.

The ref blew half time and the Tigers were one nil up and looking strong, all over the park. Sutherland on the other hand looked a bit shell-shocked, and would have well been wondering whether it was going to be their day as they must have thought they had scored at least a couple of times only to be denied by the desperate Tigers defence. What a difference from the semi final only two weeks before.

The second half started with Sutherland having the initiative and territorial advantage, but Fergie and Chopper and the back men withstood the assault and the Tigers then started getting some good possession from the midfield going forward, and were unlucky not to go 2 nil up. Alessi, Will and Mo were working hard in putting pressure on the tall Sutherland playmaker and otherwise feeding the ball out to Beast, Zac, and Aiden who were finding space out wide. The Tigers were looking composed and George was working hard up front. They were playing like the Premiers.

It was at about this time that Anthony imposed himself on the game. Although he had worked hard in both attack and defence throughout the game, and in very hot conditions, in the final few minutes he demoralised the opposition, and inspired his team mates, with some trademark moves on the ball. There was not a person at the ground who would not have been impressed with his pace and skill. It was wonderful to watch, and he was unlucky not to be rewarded with a goal for his efforts.

Sutherland then came at the Tigers one last time with a series of raids up the left wing, but Josh was fantastic and showed great athleticism in not letting the Sutherland winger get around him, and with a powerful contribution in the air from Buddle, the Tigers defence held firm.

Alessi then took control of the midfield and saw the Tigers home, and a mighty effort it had been from Lloyd and Danny's boys.

To beat a team as good as Sutherland, the moons must be aligned, and in reality there were a number of factors that combined to see the Tigers home. While it is important to recognise some of the individual performances above, they should not overshadow the real reason that the Tigers won. That was because all fourteen players played with great passion and commitment, and above and beyond their individual ability. The coaches should be proud of that, because in the end that is all they can hope to achieve with a team.

The team also probably had fate on its side. Maybe it was losing the Grand Final last year, maybe the fact that Lloyd himself as a player had followed a loss in the u/11 Metro League Final with a win the following year in the u/12's, maybe the unbridled enthusiasm of DH7, maybe the DVD Danny had put together and shown the boys on Saturday afternoon, maybe the Tigers ties which Lloyd and Danny wore, or the team Bus which was organised, maybe the cheering of the parents which seemed to fill the stadium, or the postponement of the Brazil trip, maybe the wonderful week spent by the team in Corrimal which bonded both players and parents together, or maybe a recognition by the boys that they would be moving on and would not be playing together as a team next year, but whatever it was, there was certainly a sense that this was their destiny and the boys made sure that a fairytale finish was achieved, and all credit to them for that.

It was also fitting that the Parents showed a similar level of commitment at the post match BBQ which carried on well into the night. In a way it seemed that people did not want to let go of the moment, which had been two years in the making, and was a wonderful achievement for players and coaches alike.

There is little doubt that all involved with the team will not quickly forget the game, or their years with Danny and Lloyd, but it would be nice to think that we might all get together once in a while in the years ahead to see what the boys are up to, and to remember a wonderful spring day at CUA Stadium and a wonderful season for the U/12 Tigers, the 2009 Metro Champions.

14/09/09: Under 20's claim Victory in dying seconds

UNDER 20's CLAIM VICTORY IN DYING SECONDS

The English style long ball tactic and closing in from the side's tactic of Spirit FC finally lead to their undoing in Saturday's Under 20's FNSW Super League Grand Final at Canterbury Sports Ground.

Northern Tigers FC's First Grade 'under studies' for Season 2010 did their Club proud with a number of players taking home the Grand Final Winners medal for two years running.

In sultry conditions, with temperatures way above average for this time of year, players went to the change rooms at half time with no goals recorded on the official sheets.

This was also to prove the case after the water break in the second half and into the last minute of injury time as goalkeeper's minds turned to the penalty shootout.

But it wasn't to be, after a perfectly targeted cross from the midfield Eric Koelma was on a runway to victory, with Spirit FC's depleted backline left flat footed.

The Tigers striker left nothing to chance and sensing victory rocketed the ball through to the back of the net.

With Spirit FC feeling the sense of a loss at the hands of their arch rivals a quick restart saw the ball shot long and into the Tigers box.

Tiger's fans once again had that penalty shootout sinking feeling as Spirit made one last attempt to even up.

The strike on goal at point blank range was deflected off the legs by Tigers 'keeper Marc Messina, with razor sharp reflexes. The ball resumed play but only to be halted by the referee's final whistle.

The Tigers had won the derby of all derbies and the minor premiers had stamped their authority on season 2009.

Jim Forrest President and Chairman of Football NSW presented the winner's trophy and medals to the team.

11/09/09: Under 20's ready for Spirit FC Clash

UNDER 20's READY FOR SPIRIT FC CLASH

The future of the Northern Tigers First Grade looks bright following the rise and rise of "the understudies".

In what is shaping up as a formidable side for 2010, the Under 18's shone in 2008 and now the Under 20's proved it's no fluke in season 2009.

Our under 20's take on Spirit FC in the FNSW Super League Grand Final at Canterbury Sports Ground this Saturday 12th September. Kick off is at 12.30 PM.

Finishing as minor premiers, the Tigers started with an enormously solid run, being undefeated after ten on the trot, before the encounter with this week's final opponent Spirit FC at Christie Park, going down 2-0.

After this minor blip, the Tigers under 20's romped home, wrapping up their campaign strongly in round 22 with a seasoned 2-2 draw against the local arch rivals Spirit FC.

In a show of class and buoyed by the confidence of winning the minor premiership, the Tigers came out and disposed of Parramatta PCYC in a clinical performance with an amazing twist. The under 20's Goalkeeper Hugh Raleigh had been sidelined for a marginal referees decision the week before, for handling the ball outside the box.

This red card resulted in key striker Seb Kendra being called up for GK duties and saving a penalty to add a touch more theatre to proceedings.

Coach Andrew 'Ollie' Ollier has declared his boys fit and ready for battle come Saturday. Ollie stated "There is no reason the team shouldn't be confident, we're all looking forward to it and we are good enough".

If form is any guide, the Tigers convincing Major semi-final 2-0 victory over PCYC, in the face of adversity, is in stark contrast to Spirit's 1-0 defeat at the hands of the same Parramatta side in the first qualifier.

The Northern Tigers and Spirit FC are the representative Super League sides for two of the largest Football Associations in the Country, KDSA and GHFA.

Based on the National Curriculum launched by Football Federation Australia (FFA), Project 22 is centred on Football NSW being able to exceed world best practice in providing an elite competition and training environment for our future National Team players.

Free to all selected players, this highly professional development setup allows players to train up to five (5) times a week - for 40 weeks of the year - with highly experienced and qualified instructors.

Football NSW High Performance Manager Paul Bentvelzen sees this as a fantastic opportunity for players to receive top-class coaching as well as compete in elite competitions.

"Finally we can combine a quality training environment with our own elite competition in which the ultimate goal is for player development and not the win at all cost mentality."

The Sydney metropolitan area will be divided into six regions for boys and a single central region for girls which will provide players with a training environment specific to their geographical region facilitating an easy option for parents to access player development.

Project 22 will not only act as the official state team player pathway but will also account for country development, with the Riverina, Western and Southern Regions set to administer a centre of excellence in which state team players will train one (1) night per week.

Football NSW CEO Michael Quarmby is elated with the program, as it provides talented players with an exciting opportunity to work in a professional environment with Football NSW and the FFA.

"This is one of our major initiatives that we have been planning for some time. To be able to provide free coaching on a full-time basis is something that we have been striving for. The Board of Football NSW and I are very proud that we can take the next step in developing our elite NSW based boys and girls and look forward to seeing some of their names on the Australian team sheets in the future."

"I want to congratulate the FFA on providing a clear national vision through the football development plan and the new national curriculum. The united pathway and partnership with key footballing institutions; such as the Johnny Warren Football Foundation, the NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) and the Australian institute of Sport (AIS), make towards fostering our next generation of players. It's an exciting time for an up and coming football player."

Bentvelzen sees Project 22 as a significant stepping stone in improving the standards of coaching at the junior level to rival those seen across Europe and South America.

"For the first time in Australian Football history, we finally have a long term vision for the success of our sport on the world stage."

"The national body have employed highly educated and experienced technical staff who in turn has developed a comprehensive National Curriculum. Football NSW in conjunction with the FFA have created the environment and structure through Project 22 in which this curriculum can be brought to life, I can't wait to see the rapid improvement that our best players will make when placed in a truly world class program."

Open trials will be held for boys and girls at Valentine Sports Park, Glenwood.

10/08/09: Ku-Ring-Gai U/12s Take on the World in Brazil

Ku-Ring-Gai U/12s Take on the World in Brazil - Photo courtesy of Football NSW

Ku-Ring-Gai U/12s are the first team to represent Australia in the prestigious Danone Cup.

The Danone Cup is the largest international FIFA football tournament for 10-12-year olds on October 9.

Held in the world's most passionate football nation, Brazil, the tournament boasts 560 players across 40 different countries from every continent for the 40 team event.

For three days, the best youngsters from across the world will play short nine-a-side matches on a three quarter sized field in the hope to reach the final - watched by over 35,000 spectators and 250 journalists in 2007 when South Africa took out the title.

The tournament's official ambassador Zinedine Zidane will be in Sao Paulo, Brazil, promoting the official motto of the competition: Believe in Your Dreams. This will be the first time the Danone Cup moves away from France as it celebrates its 10th year in existence.

Invited by special request, Ku-Ring-Gai will be the first team to represent Australia and will be led by Coach Lloyd Robson and team manager, Geoff Hancock on their eight day adventure.

With the State Titles clashing with the Danone Cup, the team felt it would be a little more exciting travelling to Sao Paulo instead of Mudgee this year.

"This is an excellent opportunity for the boys to travel and sign off what has been a very successful season," said Lloyd.

"They are such a close team and with each taking their own path for next season, this will be a nice way for them to say goodbye. They (the players) are over the moon and so is the club to be part of such a huge tournament. I am sure they will learn so much and personally I can also from seeing how other coaches approach the game" he added.

The U/12s are coming of a much deserved minor premiership victory, securing first place this past weekend with a game to spare. They finished with an amazing 50 goal differential, found the back of the net 70 times and recorded only one loss in 21 matches. As they prepare for the major semi finals and a possible September 13 grand final, Lloyd is set that their domestic duties are their number one priority.

"The players know that our main objective this year is to win the grand final," said Lloyd. "We will have 3 weeks to prepare for the Danone Cup after the grand final, so for now that is all that is on our minds."

The team is currently looking for outside sponsorship to help fund the trip. For further information on how you can help please contact Lloyd Robinson on 0414 014 357.

08/06/09: Northern Tigers V Sydney FC - Match Report & Photos

The Northern Tigers thanks the many supporters, players, volunteers and sponsors who attended our friendly game with Sydney FC.
Also many thanks to the local community for accommodating the influx of visitors to Mills Park Asquith from as far away as Northbridge, St Ives, Bar Beach and everywhere in between.
The night was a great success raising much need funds for both the club and the Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation.

click here for fourfourtwo.com SYDNEY FC marquee John Aloisi returned to the scoresheet tonight helping steer the Sky Blues to a clinical 3-0 win in their friendly against State Super League side, Northern Tigers.

Northern Tigers v Sydney FC - Photo by Cam Wheeler
After coming off the bench in the second half last week, the 33-year old striker started the game in Asquith, and helped create the first goal then finished off the second to give his side a match winning lead at the break.

The latest stop on the Sky Blues' suburban tour was again greeted by rain but an excellent crowd of more than 2000 people ignored the damp conditions and the temptation of State of Origin to enjoy the rare spectacle of an A-League side in action at Mills Park.

Sydney started with a strong lineup and in the 25th minute Terry McFlynn provided his side with an opener, firing home a screamer from 25 metres out after receiving the ball from Aloisi.

Ten minutes later it was the marquee's turn to find the net. Midfielder Stuart Musialik worked hard to win the ball before passing to his striker, and when Aloisi found himself one on one with the Tigers' keeper there was only ever going to be one result.

Northern Tigers v Sydney FC - Photo by Cam Wheeler

Coach Vitezslav Lavicka went to his bench at half time, with Aloisi among the players earning a rest. The changes didn't affect Sydney's momentum however, and it continued to control the contest, sealing victory when trialists, Kerim Bulut and Gustavo Latronico combined - Latronico cleaning up a Bulut cross to complete the scoring in the 73rd minute.

After recording their fourth straight friendly victory the Sky Blues will now turn their attention to next week's trial against State Premier League side, Penrith Nepean United.

Sydney FC will be bolstered by the return of Young Socceroos Kofi Danning, Rhyan Grant and Matt Jurman.

The friendly will be played at CUA Stadium in Penrith next Tuesday night, kick off 7:30pm.

24/05/09: Tiger, the Queen of Parklands Oval

Northern Tigers Arrive Alive Women's Super League's number one fan - Tiger the Wonder Dog - Photo By Chris Bluett courtesy of Football NSW

No matter how well the Northern Tigers Arrive Alive Women's Super League sides are fairing they can always be assured of the support of one loyal supporter.

Tiger, the Wonder Dog, has become a fixture at all the club's home games at Parklands Oval. Tiger, quite appropriately of the female gender, appears on the sideline every match day to cheer on, or should that be bark on, her beloved Northern Tigers.

Northern Tigers Women's Convenor, Julie Van Der Wielen, says that Tiger has been appearing at the ground during the entire eight seasons that Julie has been involved with the club. Tiger picked up her nickname from one of the club's Under 12 players about five seasons ago and the name has stuck.

At first Tiger proved to be something of a nuisance as she was prone to get too close to the action. This didn't endear the wonder dog to the refereeing fraternity. One unfortunate Northern Tigers Coach was almost red carded at one match when, after being asked by the referee to remove the dog from the field, replied that it was not his dog. The referee didn't like this answer obviously! More recently the black and whites have come to accept Tiger as something of a mascot of their own, though the Northern Tigers players aren't keen to share their number one supporter.

Julie Van Der Wielen is not Tiger's favourite team official however. "After 8 years of telling Tiger to get back over the fence she now won't allow me too close" says Julie. "A week or so back I tried to give her a sausage because she was behaving herself by sitting outside the fence during our Under 12's game. Tiger refused to take it until I left the ground and hid out of her view".

Julie says that Tiger is starting to slow down, however. "Once upon a time I'd only have to step in her direction and she'd gracefully jump the fence with a look of "okay, I'm over here now". "Arthritis seems to be affecting her back legs now and she isn't quite as sprightly".

No-one knows where Tiger lives. The Northern Tigers clan presume it's a home close by as Tiger appears from nowhere shortly after the whistle to start the first game of the day. Once the day's action is over the wonder dog disappears. Nowadays Tiger only gets near the action at half time or during warm ups. Once the referees appear Tiger knows to take a step back and just keep an eye on the loose ball. Should a ball be kicked over the sideline Tiger generally chases it and barks if someone doesn't come quickly to pick it up. She obviously likes to see a fast flowing game!

It will certainly be a sad day for the Northern Tigers when their beloved mascot no longer turns up to be part of the match day action. Go get 'em Tiger!

08/05/09: Sydney FC embraces the Community

Sydney FC's long hard road back to the top of the Hyundai A-League will take the team all over Sydney as it prepares to play eight matches against State League sides at local community grounds in the first stage of an arduous pre season.

Sydney FC will play matches in Campbelltown, Bankstown, Penrith, Asquith, Manly, Edensor Park and Sutherland with all money raised from nominal entry fees to be put straight back into the football community through the relevant State League clubs and local Associations.

The eight-match 'road trip' is an extension of last year's pre season that saw Sydney FC play three matches against State League opposition but coach Vitezslav Lavicka's thirst for more pre season matches mirrors Sydney FC's desire to take the game to the people of Sydney.

The result is clashes against State League sides Macarthur Rams, Bankstown City FC, Penrith Nepean United, Northern Tigers, Manly United, Sydney United and Sutherland with one final clash to be determined.

The first match will be against the Macarthur Rams at Lynwood Park, St Helens Park in Sydney's south-west on Wednesday 13 May with more than 1,000 tickets already pre-purchased for that match.

"I want to play as many games (as) possible so we can start to play together," said Sydney FC coach Vitezslav Lavicka. "I have a good feeling after the start of training and with the players. We also need to play games, many games. "We will start with (the) games with local (State League) teams to build little by little and then after (that) we will play some tougher games. I am happy with these games. It will help us be ready for the first Hyundai A-League game."

Lavicka's willingness to embrace Sydney FC's desire to connect with the Sydney football community has also pleased Sydney FC CEO Stefan Kamasz.

"Last year we started this initiative with games against Blacktown, Sutherland and Manly at their grounds around Sydney and we had great crowds at those games," Kamasz said. "This is an extension of our desire to embrace the wider football community. Sydney FC has stated we are serious in continuing to increase what we do with the community and I think this schedule, and the initiatives that will take place at all eight matches, proves we are willing to back up our intentions with actions."

"This schedule allows Vitja (Lavicka) to play some important pre season games, allows Sydney FC to take the stars to the fans at suburban grounds and also allows young State League players to test themselves against A-League opposition."

As well as playing games against State League sides, members of the Sydney FC coaching staff will also spend time with young players and coaches at each club before and during the match to help pass on valuable knowledge.

"Sydney FC wants to do more than just show up, play the game and help raise some money for local football so we will be putting on some coaching sessions for the elite Youth League players and 'coach the coaches' sessions with the Youth League coaches. The feedback we have received from clubs and Football NSW tells us we can offer a great service to the local football fraternity by passing on knowledge from our coaching staff and it is an important part of what we are trying to achieve over these eight weeks."

Sydney FC's pre season match schedule against State League opposition is:

  • Wed 13 May: Macarthur Rams: Lynwood Park (St Helens Park) - 7.30pm
  • Wed 20 May: Bankstown City: Jensen Park (Sefton) - 7.30pm
  • Wed 3 June: Northern Tigers: Mills Park (Asquith) - 7.30pm
  • Tue 9 June: Penrith Nepean United: Venue TBC - 7.00pm
  • Tue 16 June: Manly United: Cromer Park (Dee Why) - 7.00pm
  • Wed 24 June: Sydney United: Syd Utd Sports Centre (Edensor Park) - 7.30pm
  • Wed 1 July: Sutherland Sharks: Seymour Shaw (Miranda) - 7.30pm

At the end of the matches against State League opposition, Sydney FC will step up the intensity with matches against Hyundai A-League sides North Queensland and Newcastle as well as the possibility of playing two international teams before the start of the Hyundai A-League season on 8 August.

Sydney FC memberships for the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 season will soon be on sale.

28/03/09: Young Tigers Tinker at the Top

Click here for Football NSW website

Report By Caetano Lima, courtesy of » www.footballnsw.com.au

While most players were occupied with work, girlfriends or other non football related commitments during the 2008 off season, two Northern Tigers youngsters were busy doing what they do best: Playing football and doing so at the highest level.

David Cain and Chad Cowley may not be household names just yet, but as modern sport shows, the jump to stardom can sometimes occur in what seems to be, overnight. And this pair is certainly on the right track to making that dream a reality.

Cemented in a solid Northern Tigers First Grade squad, Cain and Cowley were selected to train with the Central Coast Mariners Youth Team last November for three months, after a deal was organized between the Kuringai Association and the A-League outfit. Central Coast Mariners Youth Coach, Damien Brown, was pleased with providing an opportunity for the upcoming youngsters to gain some valuable experience.

Having both been part of the championship winning Northern Tigers U/20 team in 2008, it was no surprise Northern Tiger's First Grade Coach, Jason Eager, had the duo's names up front when choosing who should represent the club.

"After the agreement between Kuringai Association and Central Coast Mariners was made, Cain and Cowley were the first names which came to mind," said Eager. The Tiger's boss was quick to acknowledge the "amazing technical skills" Cain and Cowley posses, while stating that both had every opportunity to make the transition from Super League to Premier League in the near future.

Cowley, who has played for the Tigers since he was 15, admitted to a bit of nerves after hearing he would be training with some of the best young players in the country. "Of course it's a little intimidating going to a team such as Central Coast Mariners Youth in the beginning, but the coach and the players made me feel so at home and the atmosphere so positive, that the nerves quickly settled and I was able to play my normal game," said the 18 year old midfielder.

Cain, 17, on the other hand was more relaxed about the whole affair, stating that the butterflies stayed at home once training begun. "I was excited to be there and ready to play football. I didn't have time to be nervous," commented the Northbridge local.

The calm nerves proved vital as the year 11 centre midfielder was invited to train with the Central Coast Mariners First Grade squad in April, based on his performance. "After my three month stint with the Central Coast Mariners Youth Team, my coach told me that I would be training with the Mariner's First Team squad. "I was and still am very excited about this prospect and just hope I can play my best football," added Cain.

The Super League youngsters admired the professional atmosphere of the Mariners, noting the boy's approach and intensity during training and the luxury of having their kit laid out prior to every session, as a professionalism they had never seen before. Just as important, was the impact the A-League Youth Coach had on both of them.

"I really enjoyed Brown's coaching methods. It was great how he would join in on the sessions and know when to have a joke and when to be serious. He provided continual feedback which helped develop my game and would never abuse or hurt the player's confidence,”"said Cowley.

When asked where the two see themselves in the next five years, A-League was a first choice pick. The pair believes it's all about working hard and doing everything possible to get their names known by the people who matter.

Cowley summed it up best.
"You must always try and play your best in order to get your foot in the door. This is the way to become known in the long run and achieve great things."

15/03/09: Tigers First Grade to wear new ICE Technology half tights

Tigers First Grade to wear new ICE Technology half tights

Skins strategic association back for 2009

Skins™ with BioAcceleration Technology™ are the benchmark in compression wear and cater for the active person in all activities.

Skins are sleeve sponsor for First Grade, Jersey Sponsor for the Under 18's and supporters of our Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick Gold Week annual event.

Skins™ gradient compression sportswear uses BioAcceleration Technology™ to improve your performance, strength, endurance and recovery by triggering an acceleration of blood flow. This increases oxygen delivery to working muscles enhancing their performance and also helps the body to eliminate lactic acid and other metabolic wastes faster.

Cool baby!

With its unique heat defeating technology, Skins ICE actually cools the athlete while the garments are on the body, making it an essential part of summer training kit.

Skins™ BioAcceleration Technology™ improves circulation, optimising the body's natural mechanism for temperature regulation, keeping you cooler when it's warm. Now this technology is teamed with something entirely new: Microencapsulation Technology™ (MET).

Skins™ ICE uses MET to embed tiny microcapsules into the proprietary fabric during the manufacturing process. The effects of activity like perspiration, friction, pressure and body temperature trigger these microcapsules to release a cooling menthol substance that has been scientifically proven to induce a cool feeling by stimulating thermo receptors in the skin.

A subtle menthol aroma is also released during activity which further evokes a cool sensation rather than being physically cooled which would be detrimental, especially during exercise.

Skins™ ICE does all of this, and incorporates all the features and benefits of the Skins sport range so training and competing during the hot summer months has never been easier or more comfortable.

For more information & an explanatory video, see: » How Skins™ ICE work

The fabric used in all Skins™ ICE garments is impregnated with a polymer that binds the microcapsules to the fibres in the fabric. After around ten washes, the microcapsules need a boost to ensure they continue to provide efficient cooling. Every Skins™ ICE product comes with a can of iceBOOST spray to recharge your ICE garment for another ten washes. Each iceBOOST can give around five to ten recharge applications.

The Central Coast Mariners Academy is a new joint venture between the Central Coast Mariners (CCM) and the Central Coast Academy of Sport (CCAS).

The Academy identifies elite young players from the Mariners' grassroots network, including partnerships with football associations on the Central Coast, Gladesville-Hornsby and Ku-Ring-Gai offering them the opportunity to participate in a high performance coaching program focused around the individual needs of the players with consideration to the commitments of school, family, club, a 'social life' and the Academy, in an environment to develop the player as a person.

The program is open to both boys & girls and is divided into multiple age groups (14's to 18's) training at two locations Jubilee Park, Long Jetty, The Entrance Central Coast and Knox Grammar School, Sydney. An U13's squad is planned to be added later in the program.
